Cake Decorating 101

My friend Buffy makes beautiful (and tasty) cookies and cupcakes. This is because she is talented, and also, because at one time, she took a cake decorating class. I have secretly been envious of this skill of hers. This is because I have always wanted to take a cake decorating class. It just seems that time, and life, and well, just about all kinds of things have taken a front seat. But, a few months ago, the Adult Division of the JVS had a course description for Cake Decorating I. It just so happened that it was a pretty affordable price, and the dates worked out with my life! Hooray! Buffy even said she'd take the class with me to brush up on her skills. Tonight was our first class. I have to admit that I was pretty nervous about it. It is creative, and will be a skill that will come in handy having 3 children. However, I am a bit of a perfectionist, and want things to be done "by the book" most times. So, I was sure this was going to be a tedious and difficult class. Buffy assured me repeatedly that it was easier than I thought. I doubted her! LOL! But......when we got there tonight, our instructor had us quickly use white frosting on some chocolate chip cookies and quickly get to work. As you can tell, these cookies aren't bakery quality, but considering I don't frost anything fancier than a cake spreader, I think these aren't too bad for my first attempt! We learned how to use a star tip, and how to "write", how to make shells, leaves, etc. So fun! I really had a great time learning to do this, and was surprised how easy it ended up being. I am anxious to keep learning. There is a bit of "skill" involved. Knowing how much pressure to use on your frosting bag, knowing what angle to hold the frosting bag. It will take time to perfect these skills, but it's time I'm willing to spend. And, I'm looking forward to next week's class. It will be our first attempt at decorating a cake! Maybe I'll keep track of our progress and post the results (good or bad) each week. At any rate, the boys and John sure thought these cookies were yummy, and were already putting their requests in for next week! Boys! They never care what it looks like, only what it tastes like, and if the cookies being gone is any indication, well, I guess I did a good job this time! Can you guess who picked and ate which cookie? Leave me your guesses, and I'll post who chose which one later! Hugs to all!
